Oaklands Welsh Rare Breed Sheep

welsh rare breed sheep

Our flock of Balwen sheep are a rare Welsh Breed, protected by the Rare Breed Survival Trust...

Balwen Welsh Mountain Sheep originate from the Tywi Valley, a very small part of Wales and the breed was almost wiped out during the disastrous winter of 1947, with only one ram surviving. The breed is distinctively attractive with its black wool, white stripe down the face and white stockings and tail. It is renowned for the sweetness and flavour of its small carcase, and the incredible spinning qualities of its black wool.

We also have two small flocks of Badger-face and Devils Bridge sheep, which are native Welsh minority breeds.

Our sheep are grass-fed and we do not dock tails as part of our organic management regime.
